Welcome to the APA Newsletter!
June 18, 2010 | We are excited to share with you our first APA Newsletter, a monthly email reporting news from our organization, our members, and information about activities taking place in performing arts communities across Canada.
There are 65 APA members ranging from community festivals to 1,000-seat theatres, and it is our passion for the performing arts unites us. We want to provide this monthly forum for you to share the news with all of us about your upcoming events, showcasing deadlines for your festivals, volunteer and job opportunities, your success stories and more.
In addition to Member News, we will include updates about Contact East 2010, and look for highlights from the exciting activities the APA staff and members are involved in, featured under APA News. And, after hearing from our membership about the importance of keeping in touch, I am looking forward to writing a note each month to the members about what I am hearing from the performing arts communities across Canada.
The APA plays an important role in putting bums in seats and touring artists on the road in our region. Thank you for being a member of the APA, thank you for your support and we look forward to sharing the news!

APA NEWS
National Rural Touring Schemes of England, Scotland, Wales & Ireland
This initiative developed out of Contact East, and our relationship with the National Rural Touring Schemes of England, Scotland, Wales & Ireland (NRTF). We have had several presenters/buyers from the NRTF in attendance at Contact East since 2003, and because of this relationship we have made a commitment to move forward and develop a more solid partnership. Three APA members are going to the NRTF conference taking place at Colchester University in Essex, UK from July 7 - July 9 where they will sit on a panel and discuss cultural exchanges and best practices for touring performing artists. The APA wants to thank the NRTF Board for their invitation to the conference, their generous hospitality, and making our members attending feel welcome. For more information about the NRTF conference and the organization visit www.nrtf.org.uk.
Atlantic Presenters Cross-Border Exchange and August Block Booking Meeting
Each year in August we have travelled to a city or town in one the four Atlantic provinces to share information, pitch artists, and block book tours to bring great, Canadian talent to our region. This year, we will take the August block booking meeting across the border to the Collins Center in Orono, Maine for the first Atlantic Presenters Cross-Border Exchange, a conference hosted by the APA and New England presenters networks, programmed for performing arts organizations from Atlantic Canada and New England to exchange ideas and expand our networks.
The purpose of this conference will be to improve cross border exchanges for the cultural and economic benefit of participating artists and arts organizations. During the conference, presenters will attend pitch sessions to promote block booking of Canadian performers, showcases to promote Atlantic Canadian and New England exchanges, and to promote cross-border bookings. We will have representatives and members from the Atlantic Presenters Association, Arts Presenters of Northern New England, New England Presenters, New England Foundation for the Arts, and the Maine Arts Commission attending, and many more.
Please join us for our first Atlantic Presenters Cross-Border Exchange. Email Sue Urquhart at sue@atlanticpresenters.ca and let us know if you would like to attend.
Time Flies When You're Having Fun! May Retreat and APA Performing Arts Creative Summit a Success
It's hard to believe just a month ago today we were in St. John's Newfoundland Labrador for our first APA Performing Arts Creative Summit - and it was snowing! We were pleased to have had 17 enthusiastic presenters participating in our workshop at the Arts and Culture Centre, and the ideas that were generated among the group were outstanding. Cheryl Ewing and Richard Poore were our workshop leaders and introduced the Ticket Buyers Segmentation model, an very good resource for presenters interested in learning more about their audience and how to program their seasons.
And only a week before the summit in St. John's we were at the beautiful Fairmont Algonquin resort with another group of enthusiastic members for our Open Space Technology workshop with Judy Harquail. We heard lots of great ideas for ways to coordinate block booking, ideas for professional development, new marketing initiatives taking place in your communities, and areas for improvement in the industry on a regional and national level. Please let us know about how the May Retreat may have influence your programming, events and initiatives for the upcoming season. Share your success stories with us for the Member News!
