APA heading to NL for arts data and management workshop

April 25, 2014 | What: "Making better decisions: How to turn arts data into action"

When: Thursday, June 5th - Friday, June 6th, 2014

Where: St. John's, NL, Masonic Temple (6 Cathedral Street)

Who this PD session is for: Arts researchers, marketers, communicators, artistic programmers and decision-makers working or volunteering in arts and cultural organizations including the performing arts (music, theatre, dance, storytelling, etc.), festivals, film, museums, heritage and other events.

Session description: Facilitated by Inga Petri, seminar participants will learn and re-enforce arts research and data analysis skills that are crucial to sound decision-making in arts organizations.

A hands-on, practical, learn-by-doing seminar, participants will be guided through typical arts research projects in order to understand 1) The building blocks of an effective and efficient research process 2) When and how to use surveys, focus groups and customer data analysis to aid better decision-making 3) How to use secondary sources of information, e.g. Statistics Canada, Hill Strategies to help understand your local context 4) Who to ask and how to recruit research participants 5) How to avoid common pitfalls in questionnaire design, from using effective rating scales to collecting useful demographic information 6) Tips and tricks for customer data analysis 7) Effective presentation of research findings and recommendations for action 8) How to turn research data into actionable insight 9) Privacy and ethical considerations in marketing research

Using real world scenarios, participants will better understand how they and their organizations can use research and data analysis in decision-making, from season planning to developing effective marketing campaigns, from pricing strategies to patron satisfaction.

Inga will demonstrate how to set up a professional online survey and how to field it for web and mobile device respondents.

Handouts include: 1) sample questionnaire design to measure patron engagement and satisfaction 2) step-by-step research design methodology 3) sample tables 4) workshop slides
