July 21, 2010 | You read it right! Contact East 2010 is taking place from September 23-26 in Antigonish, NS and that means we're only two months away from the big event. If you are attending and have not yet registered, please take a few minutes to visit our website at www.contacteast.ca/delegates and register today.

Left to right: Brian Segal, President & CEO for the Antigonish Area Partnership and Contact East Committee member; Sue Urquhart, APA Executive Director and Contact East Committee member; Liz Chisholm, Town of Antigonish Deputy Mayor and Michael Steinitz,

For those artists, managers, and agents attending who want to bring extra attention to their showcase, and for businesses and organizations who want to show their support, we now have advertising space available in our Delegate Handbook. The handbook is printed and distributed to all delegates attending Contact East 2010 and in local stores in Antigonish.

Want to make a bigger impact? We have sponsorship opportunities ranging from $250 - $1,500 which will provide you with Delegate Passes, free tickets to showcases, online promotion, signage on-site, and advertising space in the Delegate Handbook. And most importantly, as a sponsor for Contact East 2010, you are demonstrating your leadership and commitment to the performing arts.

Please contact Krista at krista@atlanticpresenters.ca if you are interested in these great opportunities and we hope you enjoy our second installment of the Contact East 2010 E-News!

International Delegate Highlight: Meet Peter Gregory, Manager of the Arts Council of Wales Night Out Scheme

Peter Gregory has street credibility in every sense of the word. He was awarded Street Entertainer of the Year twice, performed with numerous companies including Welsh National Opera, worked extensively within community arts and then spent five years as event programmer for Cardiff Council organizing various festivals and events. As co-founder of NoFit State Circus - the UK's premier new circus company - he spent 15 years swinging from a trapeze, walking tightropes and juggling his way through life both on and off the stage.

Since 2004, he has worked as the manager of the Arts Council of Wales Night Out Scheme, which is the community touring scheme for Wales ("scheme" means "network" in Canada) and brings together organizations from around the country to assist them in programming professional performances in local venues. Last year, 588 shows were booked by over 320 different groups around Wales and performances ranged from folk, world, jazz and classical music to theatre, dance, circus, puppetry and storytelling. www.nightout.org.uk

Regional Delegate Highlight: Russell Easy, Lunenburg Folk Festival

The Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival is celebrating it's 25th year and is bringing the best in traditional and contemporary folk music to the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lunenburg, NS. The festival is Nova Scotia's longest-running folk festival and has showcased great Nova Scotian, Canadian, and international talent during the past 24 years. The Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival is proud to have introduced many of the Maritimes' best-loved musicians to a wider audience, and this year the town will literally be bursting at the seams from August 5-8 with music and festival goers. With a long history of good weather (knock wood), fantastic music, and unmatched atmosphere, music lovers of all ages are in for non-stop entertainment. www.folkharbour.com

Highlight: Town of Antigonish

On July 21 the APA staff will visit Antigonish to meet with many of the people who have come on board to be part of Contact East 2010. We have had an outpouring of support from local businesses, many who have taken on significant sponsorship roles and will be highlighted in upcoming editions of E-News. A special thank you to Shelley Thompson, a resident of Antigonish and an active participant in the performing arts community, who has worked around the clock to rally together local sponsors and is a tremendous advocate for the event. We are lucky to have you as part of our team Shelley - thank you for all your hard work!

And while it's no secret that the people of Antigonish are renowned for their leadership, we also want to express our gratitude to the Town of Antigonish for their contribution of $10,000 for Contact East 2010. This commitment signifies the importance of the performing arts in their community, and we greatly appreciate the Town of Antigonish for their support.

Artist Highlight: Amanda Martinez

Born in Canada to a Mexican father and South African mother, Martinez grew up in a house that loved music. Although she spent her early years immersed in music, studying classical piano and ballet, Martinez obtained master’s degree in international business. She worked as an associate director of finance at one of Canada’s leading banks before making the decision to leave her career to pursue music full time.

For three consecutive years starting in 2007, Martinez was nominated for Latin Jazz Artist of the Year at Canada’s National Jazz Awards, and her debut album Sola won for Best World Music Album, selling over 6000 copies and becoming Toronto’s top selling indie release. While maintaining a busy performing schedule, Martinez has also been cast to guest star in various television roles including Gemini nominated ReGenesis, Life with Derek, and Train 48. In 2009 Martinez’s music was featured in the short film Every Girl Wants a Skirt like Frida, in addition to the documentary Ciclo, based on the bicycle journey that Martinez’s father and uncle took from Mexico to Canada 53 years ago.

2010 has already proven an exciting year for Martinez, with a performance alongside Jesse Cook at a sold out Massey Hall. Martinez is in the midst of her first national festival tour this summer that promises to wow the crowd with her incredible live performance. Audiences will feel Amor and continue to be amazed night after night by her energetic, soothing and playful performances. Martinez’ music transcends the barriers of language, a romantic journey that sweeps audiences off their feet. www.amandamartinez.ca

Initiative Highlight: Ryan MacGrath is Commissioned to Create Original Artwork for Contact East 2010

Ryan MacGrath grew up in the rural community of Antigonish, NS, so it's fitting that he is the visual and musical artist that will be creating a wonderful work of art for Contact East 2010, which will be inspired by the beauty of the community and the spirit of this world class conference. The original artwork will be "revealed" at a press conference in Antigonish on August 19 at 11:00am and be made available as part of a secret, silent auction. But because it's a secret, we can't give too much away just yet! More will be announced in the weeks to come, but we can say we are looking forward to having Ryan's creation as the event's image on posters, the delegates handbook, online and for our APA Awards of Excellence.

Ryan graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2001 with a focus on painting and sculpture. Sine then he has gone on to exhibit at galleries throughout Halifax and abroad and is included in many private and corporate collections including most recently the collection of musician Chantal Kreviazuk. Ryan is also a musician, and has just launched his solo debut album, Cooper Hatch Paris. To find out more about Ryan MacGrath visit www.ryanmacgrath.com
