APA’s on the Move

March 24, 2019 | APA is on the move (literally). Some of our savvy staff members will be heading to Halifax this week to attend meetings as part of our flagship dance network, Atlantic Moves.

A little background:

What’s Atlantic Moves, you ask? Well, it’s a lot of things. On paper, it’s a partnership project between APA and RADARTS (Réseau atlantique de diffusion des arts de la scène) working to increase contemporary dance performance in the Atlantic region, with the specific goals of curatorial development for presenters, audience development for their communities and the presentation of Canadian dance artists.

The network is made up of representatives from the Chester Playhouse (NS) Confederation Centre of the Arts (PE), Conseil communautaire Beausoleil (NB), Fredericton Playhouse (NB), Harbourfront Theatre (PE), Imperial Theatre (NB), Kings Playhouse (PE), King’s Theatre (NS) and the Lawrence O’Brien Arts Centre (NL). The Movers (as we like to call them) take part in an annual regional meeting, attend specialized dance performances and workshops and network with their colleagues around the country to support the growth and understanding of contemporary dance in Atlantic Canada.

Atlantic Moves also makes up part of the larger Alliance of Canadian Dance Networks along with CanDance, Made in BC: Dance on Tour, La Danse sur les routes du Quebec, and Ontario Dances Network - Ontario Presents who meet annually to see work, meet with colleagues from across the country, cram in some professional development and dream of ways to tour dance across the huge nation of ours.

In reality? It’s a group of kickass dance presenters trying to bring a little more rhythm to our neck of the woods.

Meeting of the movers

The regional meetings, taking place on March 26th and 27th, will include a review of the past year, roundtable discussions on programming for 2019-2020 season, updates from the Alliance of Canadian Dance Networks, and professional development sessions.

The pièce de résistance, however, is the opportunity to see Ballet BC perform at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium presented by APA member Live Art Dance. You didn’t really expect an Atlantic Moves meeting not to include some actual contemporary dance, did you?

After the meetings, we’ll have some fresh ideas on how to encourage, develop, and promote more contemporary dance programming in Atlantic Canada. If you’d like to learn more about Atlantic Moves, contact us at info@atlanticpresenters.ca.

We gratefully acknowledge the support from the Government of Canada and the Council of the Arts for this program.
